Tinnitus Assessment

Tinnitus is the medical term for the perception of sound in one or both ears or in the head when no external sound is present. Tinnitus is subjective, meaning that it can only be heard by the individual. It is often referred to as “ringing in the ears,” although some people hear hissing, roaring, whistling, chirping, or clicking sounds. Tinnitus is not a disease in and of itself, tinnitus is actually a symptom that can be associated with multiple causes and aggravating co-factors, such as the following:

  • Hearing loss
  • Ear and sinus infections
  • Diseases/disorders of the ear
  • Certain medications induce tinnitus
  • Jaw joint dysfunction (e.g., teeth grinding)
  • Stress and/or Anxiety disorders

One of our Audiologists will conduct a thorough case history and examination, in order to determine the possible cause associated with the tinnitus you may be experiencing. There are various treatment options available for tinnitus, which mainly focuses on your reaction to the tinnitus and finding ways to reduce the severity of the noise as well as its overall impact on your life. The Audiologist will be able to guide a management plan, based on the outcome of your hearing evaluation.
