If you suspect that you have a hearing loss or are experiencing any of the
difficulties mentioned in the previous section, it is important that you have
your hearing tested. You will be seen by an audiologist who will discuss your
concerns with you and perform the necessary hearing tests to evaluate your
hearing. The batch of tests usually consists of:
-
an otoscopic
examination (i.e. the audiologist will look in your ears)
-
pure-tone
audiometry (i.e. a test that requires you to listen for tones presented
through headphone and press a button when you hear the sounds)
-
speech testing
(i.e. a test that requires you to listen to various words/sentences and
repeat what you hear)
All results will be discussed in detail with you and if you do have a hearing
loss, your audiologist will explain whether hearing aids will be of benefit to
you. Should you decide to go this route, your audiologist will work with you to
determine which hearing aid will be the most suitable for your hearing loss and
lifestyle. She may also provide counseling to your family members to show them
how to communicate more effectively with you.
